What Is Psychology?

At its core, psychology studies the human mind and behaviour. Psychologists are concerned with and aim to explain how we think, act and feel. At Spectrum Mental Health, our psychologists are concerned with the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental health issues.

Mental Health refers to how our thinking, feelings and behaviour reflect how we are in the world. Some aspects of "good" mental health include balanced thinking, healthy emotional experience, coping with stress and managing setbacks well. It involves engaging and enjoying various aspects of life while being resilient through difficult times. In contrast mental health problems can be defined as the experiencing of distressing psychological symptoms to the extent that normal functioning is seriously impaired. Mental health difficulties can have a detrimental impact on a person’s life affecting their work, leisure, relationships and self-esteem.

Our expertise

Here at Spectrum Mental Health, our psychologists possess skills in a wide range of psychological assessments, as well as therapeutic approaches for helping children, young people and adults who are experiencing difficulties.

Our psychologists can provide evidence-based treatment for a wide range of mental health conditions. At Spectrum Mental Health, we believe that symptoms of mental health difficulties are considered to be only part of the person and that these problems do not define who you are.
