What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a chronic and exaggerated worry that seems to happen for no reason and occurs more often than not for at least six months. It is also more than just normal day-to-day levels of anxiety. It often involves excessive worries about health, money, work, family and the future.
These fears can often shift in their focus, sometimes without any sense of resolution of the original fear. A person experiencing anxiety will often describe a sense of “always being worried about something,” and will typically identify this feeling as extremely upsetting and distinctly uncontrollable.
People who experience anxiety will often jump to the worst possible conclusion about situations where there may be multiple possible explanations (e.g. believing that an unreturned phone call means that something terrible has happened, as opposed to the other person just being busy).
Even in situations where a worry has been resolved by external events (e.g. anxiety about being made redundant but instead getting a promotion), the sense of relief is often short-lived and is replaced by another new worry which may or may not be related to the first worry (e.g., “I may not be good enough to have gotten that promotion. Now that I have, I could make a huge mistake in work and the results would be terrible!”).
If you are suffering from Anxiety, there is an appropriate anxiety treatment available to help you. Through anxiety counselling and psychotherapy, you can explore the root causes of your anxiety, and learn to deal with, reduce, and eliminate it in your daily life.
