Qualifications & Education
Donal is a systemic psychotherapist and a current member of the Family Therapy Association of Ireland and the Irish Council for Psychotherapy. Donal completed a B.A (Hons) in Psychology in Dublin Business School, School of Arts. He subsequently completed a M.Sc. in Systemic Psychotherapy at University College Dublin in conjunction with Mater Misericordiae Hospital Dublin. This four year training programme in psychotherapy was comprised of theory, personal development, research and clinical practice. The M.Sc. in Systemic Psychotherapy is unique in the field of psychotherapy in the amount of couple and family training received. Donal’s research dissertation was entitled ‘Applying a systemic lens to a single story of attachment’. The purpose of the study was to expand the field of qualitative research to include people with an intellectual disability.
Following the completion of his undergraduate degree Donal began working in a private healthcare company for adults with intellectual disabilities where he was employed as an Assistant Psychologist within the Clinical Psychology department. Donal gained valuable experience working with a wide variety of adults with different presenting needs.
Throughout his time training as a Psychotherapist Donal worked with families including young children, couples and individuals who were referred to the training programme through the CAMHS teams. Donal also completed therapy work with individuals engaged in an addiction after care programme. Donal has also worked for a low cost Family Therapy service in Co Dublin meeting clients across the age range.
Most recently, Donal worked for the HSE within the primary care setting meeting with clients presenting with mild to moderate mental health difficulties including Anxiety and Depression, Bereavement, Abuse issues, Relationship and Sexuality concerns. The approach to Donal’s clinical work is best described as contemporary evidence based approach collectively referred to as Integrative Family Therapy. The core tenet of this approach is the collaborative relationship between the clinician and client at all times.
