Each and every one of us can only be as good as we believe we are. Self-esteem is a powerful tool, but learning to use it is harder for some of us than others. Your levels of self-esteem will ultimately determine where you go in life, and how successful your endeavours are. While raising it can seem like an impossible challenge, here are a few easy ways you can build up your self-esteem in your daily life.
Focus on What You Can Change
A lot of damage that is dealt to our self-esteem is, unfortunately, self-inflicted. Low self-esteem puts us in a negative mindset, which then leads us to focus solely on the negative. You need to recognise when you are focusing on something that is beyond your control, take a deep breath, and accept it. If there’s nothing you can do, don’t blame yourself.
Don’t Compare Yourself to Others
Comparing ourselves to other people has always been a terrible idea. No matter how well we think we know the people in our lives, the truth is we have no idea what goes on behind closed doors. With social media becoming as ubiquitous as it has, we are now constantly seeing the amazing aspects of life that everyone wants us to see, but none of the bad. So the next time you compare yourself to another person, remember that you’re not seeing the real version of them.
Surround Yourself with Supportive People
The people we choose to spend our time with have a very real effect on our personalities. Spending time with those who take risks will eventually encourage us to do the same, for example. Your social circles should be seen as a reflection of ourselves. These are the people we have chosen to spend time with, and whatever the reason behind it is, we become more like them the more time we spend together. So it should come as no surprise that spending time with negative people will have an effect on us. In the same way, surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people means that energy will start to rub off on you too.
Set Aside Some Time
As we grow older, we are given more and more responsibilities in life. These are often very important matters, such as marriage, or parenting, but they are still responsibilities. As we continue to take on more, the least important things in our life get cut out. But it is often these little things that make our day. Whether it’s knitting, reading, cooking, or even a weird, secret hobby you’re too embarrassed to admit, these little bits of happiness add up. So set aside some time each day or week that’s just for you, and stick to it. Even knowing that time is there to look forward to can make everything seem easier.
Some people don’t care when they make a mistake. Others care far too much. Striking the balance can be a tricky thing to do, but if you can’t learn to forgive yourself, you can’t raise your self-esteem. It’s important to realise that making a mistake doesn’t make you a bad person. If it did, we’d all be terrible people. Learning to forgive yourself for your mistakes will allow you to learn and grow from them, and over time, your self-esteem will follow.
