Anorexia Nervosa

What is Anorexia Nervosa?

Anorexia Nervosa, or anorexia as it is more commonly known, is an eating disorder. People diagnosed with the condition obsess over their weight and food and are fixated on weight loss in order to achieve their ideal weight and body image that is usually far below what is considered normal and healthy for their age and weight. People with anorexia will deliberately try to lose weight through strictly controlling their food intake, often by exercising excessively, or else by vomiting, using laxatives or taking diuretics after eating to reduce calorific intake.

This compulsive and behaviour to control their food and weight is often associated with an obsession with feeling in control and an intense fear of gaining weight. There is no definitive cause of anorexia but the disorder often starts as a diet plan or exercise regime and factors such as self-esteem, body-image issues, media representations, societal pressures, and genetic factors all play a part in the conditions occurrence.

How We Can Help

Treatment for anorexia focuses on more than just weight gain as the condition is triggered and maintained by underlying psychological issues such as pressure to be perfect, a feeling of being out of control, loneliness, or even depression. Our Psychologists at The Mental Health Company can provide effective treatment to those suffering with anorexia nervosa. Initially, treatment will involve helping the client to recognise that their current eating difficulties are having a significantly negative impact on their life.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Our psychologists may use cognitive behavioural therapy to alter dysfunctional thought patterns, attitudes and beliefs associated with anorexia to help improve the individual’s self-esteem and confidence in their body image and to encourage a healthier attitude to eating and exercise. Cognitive behavioural therapy also helps to restore normal eating habits and body weight through behavioural interventions such as setting goals for the individual to encourage them to gain weight and get better. Therapy may also be individual or family oriented depending on the age of the individual and the severity of the condition. For some people with anorexia, an exploration of underlying childhood issues, which may have contributed to the condition, may be appropriate.
